Will PUBG try the TikTok route, and bid for a comeback?

A sale like what TikTok is talking or a break with Tencent could be the options before the warmonger. But what is happening to Call of Duty even as PUBG siblings Creative Destruction, Cyber Hunter and Rules of Survival have also gone! Indian developers' future is here and now!

NEW DELHI, Sept 3: Even as the tension escalated on the Ladakh border, India on Wednesday banned and blocked PUBG Mobile, a highly popular multiplayer war game app, and 117 other Chinese apps. The Government said the ban was imposed as a security step against data theft. These apps are a threat to the sovereignty and integrity of the country, it said.

A chart-topper on Google Play and Apple Store, the war game app has had 17.5 crore downloads in India, almost 25 % of all global installations, according to analytics firm SensorTower. There are over a crore of daily users here.

This is the third time India is banning Chinese apps. The latest list includes Ludo World, APUS Launcher, Ulike, AliPay, Super Clean - Master of Cleaner, Phone Booster, Tencent Weiyun, Baidu, FaceU, AppLock Lite and Cleaner - Phone Booster. In the first dose, 59 apps were blocked in the month of June which included TikTok, and then came another batch of 47 apps. The ban comes under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act which lays down rules of procedures to block access of information by public in order to safeguard the sovereigny and intergrity of the country.

According to eSports industry sources, the PUBG (PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, inspired by the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale) ban could have a positive impact on the game business in India, offering challenging opportunities to game developers to innovate and diversify.

However, as Creative Destruction, Cyber Hunter and Rules of Survival have also gone alongwith, Call of Duty and such others will tend to fill the gap. There is also a likelihood of PUBG breaking with Tencent and qualifying for a comeback like TikTok which is in the midst of a sale deal that makes it clean.

eSports has established itself as a booming sport competition making use of video games. It has grown into international tournaments, breeding a new species of professional players.

Meanwhile, the Government recently launched Aatmanirbhar App Innovation Challenge providing an impetus to home-grown app development.
