Europe call for action against Russia for poisoning of Alexei Navalny

Europe, led by Angela Merkel, is up in arms over the poisoning of Putin opponent Alexei Navalny who is currently in a Berlin hospital undergoing atropine antidote therapy for Novichok nerve poison. Doctors see some 'Recovery in Cholinesterase activity" but, on ventilator and in coma, his full recovery is uncertain. Meanwhile, the media is replete with stories of such incidents of authoritarian regimes bumping off dissenters, with poisoning being the main modus operandi of Communist Governments.

BERLIN, Sept 4: Russian Opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned with Novichok chemical nerve agent, Germany has found in laboratory investigations. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the Russian Government is behind the "covin" as that country only developed Novichok and is in possession of the nerve poison and that Kremlin will have to answer.

The world is reacting over poisoning of Navalny with the chemical nerve agent. German ruling party is asking Angela Merkel to drop the Russian gas pipeline project as "we need a strong European answer." And there is growing demand for "EU sanctions against Russia." The NATO is also likely to call for an international probe into Navalny poisoning.

Alexei Navalny, Putin's formidable opponent, had gone to Serbia for an anti-Kremlin poll campaign and was returning to Moscow on August 20 when he was given the poison mixed in tea at the Tomsk airport from where he boarded a 4-hour flight to Moscow. He took seriously ill on board, an hour into the flight, broke out in a sweat and began screaming in pain, and the pilot diverted the flight to Omsk for medical aid from where an NGO took the initiative to fly him to Berlin for treatment.

Charite hospital sources in Berlin said on Thursday the chances of his full recovery is uncertain, although he is just 44. He is currently on atropine antidote. Doctors said there is some recovery in the "cholinesterase activity" that controls body's neuro activities. He is on ventilator and in coma.

German officials said they had found "unequivocal proof" of Novichok poisoning in tests done at a military laboratory.

The same nerve poison was used against former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in the UK in 2018. Atropine therarpy for months saved their lives. There were more such incidents: Of Nick Bailey, Dawn Sturgess and Charlie Rowley. Rowley died in a perfume spray. Then again are stories of Pyotr Verzilov of Pussy Riot and Vladimir Kara-Murza, of Alexander Litvinenko who was poisoned with polonium in tea 2006, Yuri Shchekochikhin and Anna Politkovskaya.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has described the poisoning of Navalny as 'outrageous'. He demanded an explanation from Moscow. He wants the international community "to ensure justice is done."

Merkel said the case raises "very serious questions that only the Russian Government can answer and must answer" poisoning of Navalny with the chemical nerve agent. She said, "He was to be silenced and I condemn that on behalf of the Federal Government...The Russian Government will have to answer... We inform our partners in the European Union and later about the findings we will discuss and consult together and based on information coming from Russia we will decide on joint action."

With constitutional changes effected after a referendum recently, Putin will remain in power until 2036.

Alexei Navalny's target used to be massive corruption in real estate and contracts by civil servants. His crusade spans last two decades.
