Oxford's coronavirus vaccine's clinical trials halted: Participant develops reaction, investigation is on
The news that the Oxford vaccine clinical trials are halted for safety reasons is surprising. The Oxford vaccine candidate of the Jenner Institute for coronavirus (covid) had a smooth sail all along using the harmless adenovirus as a vector. Possibly the single episode took place in a UK trial itself. It is being investigated. For how much time the clock is put back is not predictable but it has definitely thrown cold water on Trump plan to take advantage of the prospects in the poll campaign. According to the registry of clinicaltrials.gov and the NIH, the trials were going on on a large scale in the US. Read more...

NEW DELHI, Sept 9: The final phase 3 of the Oxford vaccine's clinical trials have been put on hold. The coronavirus vaccine candidate had had a smooth and safe run so far, but has now surprisingly run into unexpected trouble at the last moment. It is being investigated why one volunteer reported ill after dosing the vaccine.

AstraZeneca, the British-Swedish pharma company, has been participating in the trial and production of the AZD1222 COVID-19 vaccine with the Oxford University Jenner Institute, which had developed the vaccine. Now after a safety episode, AstraZeneca temporarily halted the clinical trials.

The pharma company has issued the following statement: "As part of the ongoing randomised, controlled global trials of the Oxford coronavirus vaccine, our standard review process triggered a pause to vaccination to allow review of safety data. This is a routine action which has to happen whenever there is a potentially unexplained illness in one of the trials, while it is investigated, ensuring we maintain the integrity of the trials. In large trials illnesses will happen by chance but must be independently reviewed to check it carefully. We are working to expedite the review of the single event to minimise any potential impact on the trial timeline. We are committed to the safety of our participants and the highest standards of conduct in our trials."

The adverse reaction has been found in a participant in the United Kingdom and the trials at dozens of sites across the US has also been put on hold .

The vaccine uses adenovirus as a vector to introduce a gene of SARS-CoV-2 to induce the desirable immune response.

The extent of the adverse reaction nor the details of the participant has been disclosed. However, it has been reported that the patient is recovering fast. Yet, it is not known how long the hold will continue. Currently there are nine vaccine candidates in the final human clinical trial stage.

AstraZeneca had earlier started phase 3 trials in the UK, Brazil, and South Africa. The clinical trials in the US began only late August. It is being carried out at 62 centres in the US, according to the registry, clinicaltrials.gov and the NIH.

Meanwhile, this new development halting the trials of the Oxford vaccine is likely to be a roadblock to US President Donald Trump's plan announced a few days ago to make available a vaccine before the presidential elections on November 3.
