Coronavirus claims first Indian life

The Union Health Ministry says the 76-year old man of Kalburgi who died had also problems like high blood pressure and asthma.

NEW DELHI, Mar 12: A suspected covid-19 (coronavirus) patient who died in Karnataka yesterday was declared today as a victim of SARS-CoV-2 after final test results came, marking the toll number 1 for India.

The Union Health Ministry said the 76-year old man of Kalburgi who died had also other problems like high blood pressure and asthma. He had returned from a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia on February 29 and had gone to Hyderabad for treatrment but died while returning to his hometown. Asymptomatic on return, he had developed fever on March 6.

With a higher number of 14 more cases being confirmed for the infection in the country today, the tally has gone up to 74: Maharashtra - 9; Uttar Pradesh - 2; Delhi - 1; Ladakh - 1; Arunachal Pradesh - 1.

The 27-year old son of a 57-year old businessman of Ghaziabad in UP who was tested positive for coronavirus a week ago, is one of two new UP cases. The businessman had visited Iran. He is in a Delhi hospital while his son is in Ghaziabad MMG district hospital.

The 69-year old mother of the Janakpuri man who tested positive for Coronavirus yesterday, also tested positive for coronavirus infection today, pushing up the Delhi cases to 6. Both are in RML hospital. The man had travelled to Japan, Geneva and Italy and returned two weeks ago. He works in a Sector 80 factory in Noida which employs 700 people who have been placed under surveillance.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Government has declared covid-19 an epidemic and ordered disinfection of offices, malls and other public places, including buses and metro, on a daily basis. Haryana too has declared coronavirus an epidemic

Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Manipur, Uttarakhand have ordered closure of schools, colleges, cinema hall, and imposed restrictions on public gatherings, at least till March 31 with a view to checking the spread of coronavirus infection.
