Swami Agnivesh dies at 80

Swami Agnivesh had been suffering from liver cirrhosis and was admitted at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in Delhi. He was on ventilator support following multi-organ failure. He was mostly known as a crusader for the bonded labour. He had founded the Bandhua Mukti Morcha and the Arya Sabha, a political party.

NEW DELHI, Sept 12: Social activist Swami Agnivesh died of cardiac arrest on Friday evening at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in Delhi. He was 80.

Suffering from liver cirrhosis, he was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday and had been on ventilator support following multi-organ failure. According to a statement by the hospital, his condition began deteriorating on Friday and he suffered a heart attack at 6 pm.

Swami Agnivesh was a social activist and a religious leader. He was mostly known as a crusader for the bonded labour. He had founded the Bandhua Mukti Morcha. He also founded Arya Sabha, a political party based on the principles of the Arya Samaj.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, MP Shashi Tharoor, senior lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan and Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi were among those who expressed condolences.

In July 2018 Swami Agnivesh was assaulted, allegedly by BJP Yuva Morcha workers, in Jharkhand, where he was supporting tribals' against land acquisition by the Government. The BJP had condemned the attack and denied the party was behind it.

Swami Agnivesh had been an MLA and Cabinet Minister in Haryana. He was conferred with the Right to Livelihood Award (also known as the Alternative Nobel) in 2004.
