India's first airport covid testing facility launched In Delhi
The facility can test 3,000 passengers per day. It takes four to five hours during when one cannot go out of the premises and will have to wait in the lounge. The total cost is Rs 5,000 of which Rs 2,400 is for the test and Rs 2,600 for the lounge. International passengers traveling without a valid negative certificate can book a slot in advance online. This is India's first airport covid testing facility.

NEW DELHI, Sept 13: The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Saturday launched covid testing at Delhi airport at its Terminal 3 where arriving international passengers can take the test. This is India's first airport covid testing facility.

The Delhi airport covid testing facility has been set up in an area of 3,500 sq feet at the multi-level car parking of Terminal 3.

Passengers with connecting flights are advised to keep an 8-10 hour window. A test can be booked onlie for a convenient slot or at the airport itself.

If the result of the RT-PCR test done at the new facility is positive, one will either be moved to a hospital or home or institutional isolation.

If the result of the RT-PCR test done at the new facility is negative, the passengers are free to move anywhere, including taking the public transport, the airport CEO said. The testing is mandatory. The authorities will keep the passport till the result comes.

The capacity of the facility is 3,000 per day, which can be ramped up. The testing takes four to five hours during when one cannot go out of the premises and will have to wait in the lounge. The total cost of airport covid testing is Rs 5,000 which includes Rs 2,400 for the test and Rs 2,600 for the extra lounge arrangements.

The coronavirus facility ensures safe journey to all passengers entering the city or scheduled for domestic connecting flights, the Delhi International Airport Limited said in a statement.

International passengers traveling without a valid COVID negative certificate can book a slot in advance, the airport operator said.

"Passengers will have to provide with their details such as name, contact details and valid ID proof while applying online for this facility. They will also have an option to modify the slot in case they are not able to reach at the scheduled appointment time. Besides, passengers belonging to the same family can book a single slot all together through online," the DIAL statement said.

"Until the results are confirmed, passengers will be isolated at the waiting lounge or may opt to stay in a hotel. In case of a positive result, passengers will be processed in line with applicable ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) protocols by the State authorities. This will help the authorities concerned to avoid passengers affected with the disease from coming in close contact with those already having RT-PCR negative report ," DIAL stated.

International passengers with negative covid report will no longer have to undergo the 7-day institutional quarantine that has been mandatory until now.

GMR group-led DIAL operates and maintains the Delhi international airport. The facility is not a collection centre, but rather an actual testing facility.
