Macron asks Putin to clarify on poisoning of Navalny; European leaders plan joint action
French tests confirmed the finding by the Berlin hospital that Russian Opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned with Novichok nerve agent, the French President told the Russian President and asked him to shed light on the "attempted murder". Putin replied that it is "unfounded" allegation. The Russian police said it wants access to Navalny to question him and wanted Germany to hand over the medical test results.

PARIS, Sept 14: French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday urged his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a telephonic talk to shed light on the "attempted murder" of Russian Opposition leader Alexei Navalny after French tests also confirmed the use of the Novichok nerve agent.

"It is imperative that all light be shed, without delay, on the circumstances of this attempted murder and who is responsible", the French presidency said in a statement.

Navalny was poisoned by Novichok, "in contravention of international norms on using chemical weapons", the statement said. It said that French tests had confirmed the finding by the Berlin hospital investigation, Macron told Putin.

According to the statement, Putin replied that it is inappropriate to make unfounded allegations against Russia. The Russian leader said his country wanted Germany to hand over the medical test results of Navalny.

The Siberian transport police said in a statement that Russia seeks access to Navalny to question him.

Independently done Swedish tests have also confirmed Germany's findings that Russian Opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent.

Navalny was brought to the Berlin hospital in a serious condition last month and is receiving treatment in Charite hospital. The 44 -year-old Kremlin critic and anti-corruption campaigner fell ill after boarding a plane in Siberia last month and was hospitalised there before being flown to Berlin.

He is currently out of coma and is responding to speech, Berlin hospital sources said.

"We are in close contact with our European partners about further steps," a German official said.
