Panic grips Mumbai as prohibitory orders extended till month-end
The Maharashtra Government said there is no need to panic even as there was scare in Mumbai as the social media began spreading rumours about the new prohibitory orders and increasing cases of coronavirus. The police said that in the face of the heightened threat of the covid pandemic, the prohibitory order has been extended till September 30. There are no new restrictions, they clarified. Meanwhile, Mumbai recorded 2,411 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 1,78,385, and 43 new deaths, the total casualty going up to 8320.

MUMBAI, Sept 18: Prohibitory orders under Section 144 were reimposed on Mumbai from Thursday midnight till the end of September in view of the alarming spread of coronavirus infections. The order prohibits assembly of four or more people at a place.

The Mumbai police clarified that the order does not impose new restrictions on the movement of people. Travel in emergency and listed non-emergency situations will be allowed as earlier. Existing restrictions and exemptions will continue. In fact, Section 144 had already been in force and the new order is an extension only, they said. Existing restrictions in containment zones will continue.

“Whereas Mumbai city continues to be threatened with the spread of Covid-19, it is considered expedient to issue prohibitory order for restricting any presence or movement of one or more persons in public places or gathering of any sort anywhere, including religious places to prevent further spread of the Covid-19 virus in the areas under the control of Commissioner of Police, Greater Mumbai,” the order said.

There was panic in the city as the social media began spreading rumours about the new prohibitions and increasing scare of coronavirus.

"No need to panic. The order issued under section 144 CrPC is only an extension of the previous order issued on 31st August. No new restrictions have been imposed by the Mumbai Police," tweeted Aditya Thackeray, a minister in the Maharashtra Government.

Mumbai recorded 2,411 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 1,78,385, and 43 new deaths, the total casualty going up to 8320.
