Thousands infected with crippling bacterial brucellosis in China after vaccine factory leak
The brucellosis outbreak came from a leak at the Lanzhou biological pharmaceutical factory, which produces brucella vaccines for animals. The factory used expired disinfectants and sanitisers with the result, not all bacteria were eradicated. The aerosols carried by the exhaust gas from the factory spread in the neighbouring areas leading to the outbreak.

BEIJING, Sept 19: Thousands of people have been infected with a bacterial disease called brucellosis in the Chinese province of Gansu in an outbreak that occurred due to a leak of contaminated gas from a bio pharmaceutical company manufacturing livestock vaccines.

The Health Commission of Lanzhou, the Capital city of Gansu province, in north-west China, confirmed that 3,245 people had contracted brucellosis, usually caused by contact with livestock carrying the brucella bacterium. There have, however, been no fatalities, Xinhua reported.

The symptoms include headaches, muscle pain, fever and fatigue. Some of the serious symptoms will stay for life like arthritis or swelling of organs. This has been confirmed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Human-to-human transmission is rare. Infection comes from contaminated food and breathing in the bacteria, when the aerosols contain the germs. The latter has been the case in the Lanzhou outbreak.

The outbreak originated from a leak at the Lanzhou biological pharmaceutical factory, which produces brucella vaccines for animals. The leak took place in July-August last year. The factory used expired disinfectants and sanitisers with the result, not all bacteria were eradicated.

The aerosols were carried by wind to the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute, where the outbreak occurred. By December, 181 people at the institute had been infected with brucellosis, according to the Chinese State news agency. It spread to Heilongjiang province, where 13 positive cases have also been found.

In January, vaccine production licence of the plant was withdrawn and also the approval of the two brucellosis vaccines.
