Tatas launches cheap and best 'Made in India' Feluda test for corona

The Tatas worked with the CSIR-IGIB and the ICMR to produce this world class Feluda test for coronavirus using CRISPR technology, said to possess futuristic values. Feluda is quick, economocal, accurate like 'gold standard' RT-PCR, easy to use and Made in India.

NEW DELHI, Sept 21: The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved the commercial launch of Feluda, a Tata product for coronavirus testing using a Made in India technology developed by CSIR-IGIB called CRISPR technology.

The indigenously developed CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) technology is deployed for the detection of the genomic sequence of SARS-CoV-2 virus (coronavirus), the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) said in a statement on Saturday.

Feluda test is quick, economocal, accurate like 'gold standard' RT-PCR, easy to use and Made in India.

The genome editing technology to diagnose diseases has been developed by CSIR-IGIB (Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology) in record time because it had been on a similar job vis-a-vis sick cell anaemia research for genome diagnostics for long time earlier, it is learnt.

It meets high quality benchmarks with 96 per cent sensitivity and 98 per cent specificity for detecting novel coronavirus as per ICMR guidelines, the CSIR statement said.

The CSIR-IGIB are also the first in the world to deploy Cas9 protein to detect coronavirus. This technology is said to possess futuristic values. It has been described as a futuristic technology because it will come handy for use in the case of other pathogens too.

"The Tata Group has worked closely with CSIR-IGIB and ICMR to create a high-quality test that will help the nation ramp up Covid-19 testing quickly and economically, with a 'Made in India' product that is safe, reliable, affordable and accessible," the statement claimed.

Girish Krishnamurthy, CEO, TATA Medical and Diagnostics Ltd, said, "The approval for the Tata CRISPR test for Covid-19 will give a boost to the country's efforts in fighting the global pandemic."
