26 killed in Ukrainian military plane crash in Kharkiv, 100 km from conflict zone
The Antonov-26 was carrying 20 cadets and seven officers from Kharkiv Air Force University when it crashed in nearby Chuhuiv, about 100 km from the place where pro-Russian separatists are active. In 2014, Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was downed killing 298 people in eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

KIEV, Sept 26: Twenty six people, mostly cadets, died when a Ukrainian military plane crashed about 2 km from a military airport in the town of Chuhuiv, near the eastern city of Kharkiv, on Friday.

The plane, an Antonov-26 aircraft, was carrying 20 cadets and seven officers from Kharkiv Air Force University. Only one person survived. It was on a training flight but the captain himself was flying.

The flight commander had requested to land because the left engine had failed, it is learnt. The plane burst into flames on landing. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in an hour.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has ordered an "objective and unbiased" investigation into the crash. "We have lost young cadets and experienced military servicemen who had their whole life ahead of them," he said.

Chuhuiv is about 100 km from the place where pro-Russian separatists are active. Several military planes have crashed in Ukraine during training flights in recent years. In 2014, Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was downed killing 298 people in eastern Ukraine controlled by pro- Russian separatists. Moscow denied the findings of international investigators that a Russian BUK missile hit the plane.
