An injured Serena Williams pulls out of French Open: 24th Grand Slam title dream crashes
Serena Williams' dream of winning her 24th Grand Slam title, the all-time singles record, is dead in water as of now. An injured Serena withdrew from French Open. With the current and corona-delayed French Open being the final Grand Slam of this year, she may have to wait until next year for a chance to tie Margaret Court’s record.

PARIS, Sept 30: An ankle injury has forced Serena Williams to withdraw from the French Open. She said she may not play again this year. She had reached the semifinals of the US Open earlier this month and, alas, realising her 24th Grand Slam title dream was within spitting distance. And it was her 39th birthday this week!

She was to play Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova in the second round on Wednesday when she discovered that her left Achilles tendon injury is too much. Pironkova advanced to the third round.

Serena Williams told reporters she had difficulty in walking and that it would take four to six weeks of rehab. After her first-round victory over Kristie Ahn on Monday, Williams said she was using ice to tend to the injury. The injury she suffered in New York had not recovered fully.

“I warmed up. It was a very short warmup, and then afterwards I talked to my coach and I was like: ‘What do you think? What are your thoughts with this?’ We both thought about it, and we realized that it more than likely wasn’t the best for me to try to play today,” Serena Williams said.

“I love playing in Paris. Actually, I adore the clay. It’s so fun for me. And I really wanted to give an effort here, so it’s my Achilles’ that didn’t have enough time to properly heal after the [U.S. Open]. I was able to get it somewhat better, but just looking long term in this tournament, will I be able to get through enough matches? For me, I don’t think I could, struggling to walk, so that’s kind of a telltale sign that I should try to recover,” she said.

The current French Open is the final Grand Slam of this year. Next year she could try to tie Margaret Court’s record.
