Modified missile-proof Boeing 777 for Prez, PM's travel arrives, may get new call sign

The modified Boeing 747 plane called Boeing 777 is capable of carrying a missile defence system that can counter missile threats. The VVIP Boeing is for the President and PM's use. Two Boeing 747s were sent for refurbishing. The second one is also arriving soon. These planes will be operated by Indian Air Force pilots, who are getting training to fly the new planes. As Air India is on sale, the new call sign may change from the earlier Air India One.

NEW DELHI, Oct 1: A specially modified Boeing 777 plane for the exclusive use of the President of India and the Prime Minister arrived in Delhi, flying a distance of 13,000 km in 15 hours, from Texas in the US on Thursday. Two Air India Boeing 747, which were part of the VVIP fleet, had been flown to the US for modifications.

The modified Boeing, said to be missile-proof, arrived at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the afternoon on Thursday.

It is capable of countering missile threats with its own missile defence system, which is called the Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) and Self-Protection Suites (SPS).

The President and the Prime Minister in the past travelled long distances, especially abroad, by Air India Boeing 747, rechristened Air India One. Air India’s Boeing 747 planes which run commercial flights used to be temporarily reconfigured for the dignitaries whenever they wanted to travel long distance. The temporarily customised Boeing 747s used the sign Air India One. The Prime Minister, President and the Vice-President used to travel by this reconfigured planes.

The second modified B 777 will arrive later.

The refurbished planes will be operated by Indian Air Force pilots who are getting training on the aircraft.

As Air India has been put up for sale, the Boeing 777 may have a new name instead of Air India One.

The modified planes have more office space and a meeting room for the Prime Minister's official use. The delivery of the aircraft was scheduled for August 25. The company said the delay was due to operational issues.

The Government had planned to procure two such specially modified Boeing-777 aircraft. The second is in the pipeline.
