ICMR gets DCGI nod for clinical trial of antisera for coronavirus treatment
The ICMR has got the permission to conduct clinical trials of antisera it has developed from horses to treat covid. Equine serum from horses overcomes the challenge of limited availability of convalescent plasma from recovered patients which are also unreliable and at the same time laborious and expensive to generate. Antisera had earlier been tried for viral and bacterial infections like rabies, hepatitis B, tetanus and diphtheria.

NEW DELHI, Oct 7: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has got approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to conduct clinical trials of antisera, antibodies obtained from horses, for the prevention and treatment of coronavirus as an alternative to convalescent plasma therapy, which has been found to be ineffective and difficult to obtain.

"With Biological E Limited we have developed a horse antisera and we have just got clearance for conducting clinical trials for that," ICMR Director-General Dr Balram Bhargava said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

The ICMR had announced on last Thursday that it had developed, jointly with Hyderabad-based Biological E Ltd, blood serum of horses containing antibodies against covid-19. It said the antisera, obtained by injecting inactivated SARS-CoV-2 in horses, could be a potential therapy.

Ten healthy horses were immunized with inactivated SARS- CoV-2 virus and after 21 days of immunization, plasma samples were tested. The plasma samples indicated presence of SARS- CoV2 specific antibodies.

“Although, plasma recovered from patients experiencing covid- 19 could serve similar purpose, the profile of antibodies, their efficacy and concentration keep varying from one patient to another and therefore make it an unreliable clinical tool for patient management," ICMR had said in a tweet.

Plasma therapy was tried on 464 patients across 39 hospitals in India. It had shown no benefit in reducing mortality and also did not arrest the progression of disease from moderate to severe, Bhargava said.

“Equine hyper-immune serum overcomes the challenge of limited availability of convalescent plasma from recovered patients. Monoclonal antibodies on the other hand are laborious and expensive to generate," the ICMR statement had said.

Antibodies from horses, known as equine antisera, had earlier been tried for viral and bacterial infections like rabies, hepatitis B, tetanus, and diphtheria.
