WASHINGTON, Oct 9: The FBI has busted a militia plot to abduct Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who had enacted strict measures to prevent coronavirus spread which were thrown out by the court last week.
The Guv, Democrat, said the hate groups were inspired by President Trump's remarks.
The Michigan-based militia members were planning to overthrow State Governments "that they believed were violating the US Constitution" by enforcing lockdowns.
Thirteen people were arrested by investigators. Six of them planned to kidnap the Guv and hold a "treason trial" against Mrs Whitmer. The other seven face charges of terrorism. These seven were associated with the militia group 'Wolverine Watchmen.'
They planned to storm the Capitol building and take hostages, including the Governor, before elections on November 3.
Michigan protesters were the most vocally opposed to lockdown measures.
Whitmer and Dana Nessel, the Michigan attorney general, linked the extremist plot to President Trump's encouraging remarks.
Trump tweeted, “She calls me a White Supremacist—while Biden and Democrats refuse to condemn Antifa, Anarchists, Looters and Mobs that burn down Democrat run cities.”
Homeland Security had warned recently of extremist attack over stay-at-home orders, social distancing measures and closures ordered by Government.
