Coronavirus can survive on human skin for 9 hours, Japan study confirms
The influenza A virus (IAV) stays on human skin only for two hours, while coronavirus can survive up to nine hours, Japanese researchers found.

NEW DELHI, Oct 10: Coronavirus can survive up to nine hours on human skin, it has been confirmed in a new study, underscoring the need to ensure hand hygiene.

The influenza A virus (IAV), in contrast, stayed on human skin only for two hours, according to researchers from the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Japan.

“The 9-hour survival of SARS-CoV-2 on human skin may increase the risk of contact transmission. Proper hand hygiene is important to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infections,” the study said. Human cadavers one day after death were used to conduct the study.

"We generated a model that allows the safe reproduction of clinical studies on the application of pathogens to human skin and elucidated the stability of SARS-CoV-2 on the human skin," the researchers wrote in the journal, Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Earlier, US researchers too had discovered that the coronavirus can stay on skin for several hours.
