New Expressway from Delhi to Doon to cut travel time to 2.5 hrs

The planned eway which will soon be a reality will boost tourism in the much sought-after Himalayan State of Uttarakhand, famous for its whitewater rafting, paragliding (now prohibited), climbing, glaciers and wellknown pilgrim centres. The journey time will reduce from the present five hours to two and a half and the distance from 250 km to 180 km

DEHRADUN, Feb 27: An expressway from Delhi to Dehradun in Uttarakhand, reducing the travel time from the present five hours to two and a half and the distance from 250 km to 180 km, will be built in about three years to boost tourism in the State.

According to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, the Centre has approved the plan and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will undertake the job. The Chief Minister tweeted that the eway will also accelerate the economic development of the Himalayan State.

The eway which will pass through Loni, Baghpat and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Mohand, Ashrodi and Ganeshpur in Uttarakhand, will be an elevated corridor probably with toll plazas. The necessary land surveys have started for the project that is estimated to cost around Rs 2000 cr.

The NHAI says the project will be executed in three phases and environment clearances will be needed as the eway is planned to pass through certain forest areas of Uttar Padesh. The first phase of 31 km will be from Akshardham in Delhi to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, the second till Saharanpur will be 118 km and the third phase will be of 20 km that includes two tunnels of two km.

Uttarakhand boasts of destinations like Jim Corbett Tiger National Park, Valley of Flowers, Char Dham pilgrim centres Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Gangotri, the holiest Har-Ki-Pauri in Haridwar for salvation, the mythological Lakshman Jhoola across the Ganga, the all-quiet Nainital lake in the Kumaons and several glaciers in the lap of the awesome Himalayas.
