Amy Barrett sworn in as US Supreme Court justice: Trump comes under fire for rushing nomination ahead of polls
Democrats have condemned Trump's action just before a presidential election as an attempt to pack the highest court with pro-Republican judges. Rushing a nomination just before election has never happened before. This is the third nomination made during Trump's tenure and the court has now a 6 to 3 conservative majority.

WASHINGTON, Oct 27: Judge Amy Coney Barrett was sworn in as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States by Justice Clarence Thomas in the presence of President Donald Trump, who nominated her in place of Ruth Bader Ginsburg who died recently, at an outdoor White House ceremony late on Monday.

Earlier, the Republican majority Senate approved her nomination by a 52 to 48 votes after debates marked by scathing attacks mounted by the Democrats over the unprecedented nomination happening just before a presidential election in an attempt to, as what they said, pack the highest court with conservatives. This is the third nomination made during Trump's tenure and the court has now a 6 to 3 conservative majority.

"This is a momentous day for America, for the United States Constitution and for the fair and impartial rule of law," Trump, standing alongside Barrett, said at a function attended by lawmakers and others on the South Lawn of the White House immediately after the swearing-in.

"I stand here tonight, truly honoured and humbled," Barrett, who also spoke, told the gathering.

Barrett, a 48-year-old, described as conservative, fills the vacancy caused by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the liberal icon and women's rights advocate. She died on September 18 at an age of 87.

Although the Constitution is silent on the timing of a Supreme Court nomination, the Democrats cried foul as it has never happened close to an election and amounted to unethical misuse of power. The Republicans refused to hold hearings for Barack Obama's nominee in 2016 after he nominated Merrick Garland to fill a vacant seat even as the election was eight months away.

Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer told the Republicans in his speech, "...you will speed the precipitous decline of faith in our institutions, our politics, the Senate and the Supreme Court."

Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the judicial oath to Barrett on Tuesday at the Supreme Court.
