Three-year jail term for ex-NDA Minister Dilip Ray in coal scam
Alongwith former Union Minister Dilip Ray two officials were also sentenced to three years' imprisonment for their role in the alleged irregularities in the allocation of the Brahmadiha coal block in Giridih of Jharkhand to CTL in 1999. Ray was Minister in the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA Government. He was convicted on October 6.

NEW DELHI, Oct 27: Former Union Minister Dilip Ray was sentenced to three years' imprisonment for his role in the alleged irregularities in the allocation of a Jharkhand coal block in 1999. Irregularities were found in the allocation of the Brahmadiha coal block in Giridih of Jharkhand to CTL.

Besides Dilip Ray, the special CBI court of judge Bharat Prashar also awarded three-year jail sentence to two others who were also convicted recently for their role in the coal scam. A fine of Rs 10 lakh was also imposed on all the three convicts. The CBI had sought life imprisonment for the former Union Minister as an exemplary punishment as such crimes by higher-ups are increasing.

Ray was Minister in the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA Government. He was convicted on October 6 and reserved order to October 26. Ray was convicted under various sections including 409 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which pertains to criminal breach of trust of trust by a public servant. The judge had said that Ray “dishonestly facilitated allocation of the abandoned non-nationalised coal mining area in favour of CTL and that too in violation of the direction of law.”

The other convicts were two senior officials of the Coal Ministry at that time - Pradip Kumar Banerjee and Nitya Nand Gautam - and Castron Technologies Ltd’s (CTL) director Mahendra Kumar Agarwalla.
