Eli Lilly covid antibody found ineffective on hospitalised patients
The NIH, which sponsored the trials, has declared the drug, although safe, not effective in the treatment of covid.

WASHINGTON, Oct 29: Eli Lilly has called off trials of its antibody drug, which had been touted as one of the most promising treatment approaches for coronavirus. This announcement comes two weeks after it paused the trial citing a potential safety concern.

The company announced it has stopped antibody drug trials in hospitalized covid patients as it has been found ineffective, although it had been found to be safe according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The pharma said other trials will go on, like trying the drug on patients with mild infection.

The therapy, alongwith that of Regeneron, had been described by US President Donald Trump as the best treatment when he was admitted recently at the military hospital.

It is a setback for one of the most promising treatment approaches for covid. However, Lilly and Regeneron have asked the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to grant emergency use authorization for their drugs for covid. Lilly said its request is based on the finding that the drug helps patients who are not hospitalized.

The Lilly antibody drug was under trials sponsored by the NIH, which has now declared the drug, although safe, is not effective in the treatment of covid. The drug was being developed with the Canadian company AbCellera.

Lilly had started trials in August in 50 sites in the US, Denmark and Singapore.

Meanwhile, Regeneron has 50,000 doses available currently. In a few months it will manufacture three lakh more while Lilly was to make one lakh this month and one million by year end. The US had given $450 million grant as part of Operation Warp Speed to Regeneron for supply of free medicines. But Lilly had no agreement or funds from the Government.

Lilly had earlier also paused its trials when Johnson and Johnson too halted Phase III trials of its lab-produced one dose anti-body drug.

Astra-Zeneca too had started trial of antibody treatment and the US had signed an agreement for supply of the drug.

Antibodies are certain proteins the human body makes in response to an infection. It attaches itself to the virus and eliminates it. The experimental antibody drugs are laboratory made versions.
