105 deaths in a day in Spain, 388 in Italy

There was a sudden spurt in casualties in Spain while the toll in Italy, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak in Europe, went up by 388 to 1829.

NEW DELHI, Mar 15: In just one day today, Spain in a sudden surge recorded a death toll of 105, taking the total to 295 so far while the toll in Italy, the worst hit after China by the coronavirus outbreak, went up by 388 to touch a worrisome figure of 1829.

The epicentre of the global contagion shifting to Europe, the worldwide toll has crossed 6,000. The second worst hit after China, Iran in West Asia today registered a death toll of 113, the total going up to 724, with an infection tally of 14,000. Several top officials too have become victim of the infection there.

There was also a sudden jump in coronavirus cases in Thailand, reporting 32 new cases, the biggest daily rise.

In Spain, the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was tested positive for coronavirus. Minister Irene Montero and another Minister were declared infected yesterday. Five Bazilian officials who accompanied President Jair Bolsonaro for a meeting with US President Donald Trump have tested positive for the pathogen. Trump who claimed he had "normal temperature" subjected himself for the test and came out negative.

Meanwhile, a British cruise ship, Braemar, with 29 Indian crew, was detained off Bahamas as 20 passengers had shown symptoms of coronavirus, a newspaper report said.

In the US, the Federal Government that appeared to be complacent in the beginning is now finding it difficult to cope up with the aftermath of the sudden spread and casualties caused by a raging contagion. The bar on flights from Europe has led to unmanageable confusion at the airports. The earlier dismantling of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has created a vacuum in the testing scenario. Testing has a vital role in the containment of the outbreak of coronavirus contagion by monitoring for any community transmission.
