100 more sarcophagi dating back 2,500 years unearthed south of Cairo: Boost for tourism
Sarcophagi is stone-made or wooden coffin found in Egypt, Rome and Greece. The new finding in Saqqara in Cairo provides a boom for tourism. Archaeologists say these coffins belonged to top officials of the Ptolemaic period of ancient Egypt. Search is on to find the ancient workshop for manufacturing wooden coffins for mummies.

CAIRO, Nov 14: The archaeologists in Egypt have discovered 100 sarcophagi dating back more than 2,500 years, the Government said on Saturday. Sarcophagi is a stone-made or wooden, inscribed coffin found in Egypt, Rome and Greece.

The sealed wooden coffins in the Saqqara necropolis south of Cairo is the largest such find this year. Egypt’s Tourism and Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anany said the discovered items date back to 664 BC to 332 BC.

Experts said the items belonged to top officials of the Ptolemaic period and others of ancient Egypt.

Saqqara was an active burial ground for more than 3,000 years and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A month ago, 59 other well-preserved and sealed wooden coffins were found at the site.

"Saqqara has yet to reveal all of its contents. It is a treasure," the Tourism Minister said at the unveiling ceremony. "Excavations are still underway. Whenever we empty a burial shaft of sarcophagi, we find an entrance to another," he said. More than 40 statues of ancient deities and funerary masks were also discovered, he said.

Another two wooden statues were found in the tomb belonging to an ancient judge of the 6th dynasty, according to Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

A search is on to find the ancient workshop for manufacturing wooden coffins for mummies soon, he said.
