Everything shut, an eerie silence descends on America

With coronavirus cases suddenly shooting up beyond four thousand, the death toll nearing a hundred, schools, cinemas, malls, theatres closed, panic buying and hoarding have depleted all stocks in shops across America, not even toilet paper easily available.

GENEVA, Mar 16: Spain has become the fourth most- infected country after China, Italy and Iran, leaving South Korea far behind. While China is now freed from the clutches of the worst-ever viral outbreak, deaths are reported in hundreds in Italy, Iran and Spain daily with no let-up in new infections.

In the US, in most cities with schools and offices closed and most employees working from home, roads and streets bore an eerie look. New York, the city that never slept, has shut all nightclubs, theatres, cinemas and concerts. Panic buying and hoarding have depleted all stocks in shops across America, not even toilet paper easily available. Hospitals are houseful. The sudden spurt in infection caught a complacent Government unawares, now finding it difficult to bring the runaway situation under control.

The US Federal Reserve cut interest rates a second time in two weeks to revive a sagging economy by encouraging investment.

Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria and many others in Europe have closed borders and ordered public places like malls and cinemas shut, and banned public gatherings to minimise the transmission of the virus. Britain too ordered ban on public gatherings and restricted incoming flights. Queen Elizabeth shifted residence to minimise public interactions, it was reported.

The coronavirus cases in Pakistan jumped by 83 in a day to 136 today. Sindh border near Iran is the worst hit with 103 patients.

Switzerland followed other countries, declared emergency, closed all shops, restaurants, bars, except grocery and medical shops.
