Delhi curbs on gatherings, flights from Europe banned

While in Italy there were 349 deaths from coronavirus today, taking the tally to over 2,000 so far, India has not experienced any spurt in cases and the overall figure is just over 100 with two deaths, even as the US medical system is collapsing under the sudden rise in cases and casualties for which the administration was not prepared for.

NEW DELHI, Mar 16: Delhi, the national Capital, has banned gatherings of more than 50 people till Maech 31. The local Government has also ordered shut schools, colleges, gyms, weekly markets, clubs, cinemas, monuments, pools and spas to prevent transmission of covid-19. Malls and restaurants will remain open for now.

The Delhi Government has started paid quarantine facility at three hotels in Aerocity near the IGI airport for those flyers who want such comforts and can pay. There will be 182 rooms at RedFox, IBIS and Lemon Tree.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has also ordered installation of handwashers across the city. He told the people there is no need to panic and informed them of three simple things to do to prevent infection: Frequent handsash; Not touching one's face while outside; and, Social distancing - keeping a distance of a minimum of one metre from one another.

The Union Government banned flights from Europe till March 31. Passegers from other infected countries like Qatar, UAE, Oman and Kuwait will be quarantined for 14 days. Passengers from China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Iran are already being quarantined. Contact-traced 5,200 people are under watch.

The Railways too has started thermal screening of passengers inside the trains. All curtains and blankets have been removed from AC coaches to prevent spread of coronavirus infection. There are 22 million rail passengers a day.

The confirmed cases of coronavirus in India reached 114 with four new cases reported today, one each from Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha and Kerala. While two patients have died, about 10 have been cured and discharged.

Coronavirus has spread to about 150 countries, infecting over 1,80,000 people and claiming 8,000 lives. The epicentre of the outbreak has shifted from Wuhan, where the outbreak began, to Europe, with cases surging day by day in Italy, Spain and France. In Italy there were 349 deaths today and yesterday the figure was 368.
