Severe cyclone to lash Tamil Nadu, Puducherry coast Wednesday evening; Govt offices closed in TN
A severe cyclone is approaching the Tamil Nadu coast and is likely to make landfall Wednesday evening between Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu and Karaikal in Puducherry. According to weatherman, the storm and accompanying heavy rain will devastate vast swathes of coastal areas. All Government offices are shut on Wednesday. PM Modi has assured both the Chief Ministers of Central assistance. CHENNAI, Nov 24: A severe cyclone Nivar is forecast to batter the Tamil Nadu coasts with winds gusting up to 120 km per hour on Wednesday evening. All Government offices will remain closed on Wednesday. Essential services will function, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had spoken to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister as well as Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasami and assured of all possible support from the Centre.

The cyclone will bring extremely heavy rain and winds on the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The weather system was on Tuesday morning a deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal, about 360 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 420 km southeast of Chennai.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast that Nivar could make a landfall between Mamallapuram and Karaikal district in the Puducherry region with windspeeds in the range of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph, on Wednesday evening.

Twelve teams of the State Disaster Response Force have been deployed. The 108 ambulances are in a state of preparedness for emergencies.

The Indian Navy and the Coast Guards have been alerted.

Relief is being despatched to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast from other places.

The Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) at Kalpakkam has taken precautions.

Puducherry is likely to be severely impacted and Section 144 has been imposed on vulnerable areas to prevent movement of people in open places.
