Delhi tops national capitals in air pollution, Ghaziabad worst city in world

Delhi for the second year has topped the list of national capitals in air pollution and UP's Ghaziabad city has ranked as the most polluted city in the world. Among countries, Bangladesh is the most polluted, according to the World Air Quality Report 2019 compiled by IQAir AirVisual.

WHO says air pollution claims seven million lives each year as particulate matter leads to pulmonary and cardiac diseases. The PM2.5 particle that measure upto 2.5 micrometres can enter the blood stream direct in inhalation

NEW DELHI, Feb 27: Ghaziabad city in Uttar Pradesh is the most polluted city in the world and Delhi for the second year running tops the list of national capitals for this dishonour. Bangladesh was the most polluted country with an average PM2.5 concentration of 83.3 ppm.

The previous two years the UP city occupied the second slot. Out of the cities studied by the Switzerland-based pollution monitoring company IQAir last year, China improved its position by taking action to check air pollution in their worst clogged cities like Shanghai.

India stands fifth in the most polluted countries list with average pollution levels of 58.1 ppm. Pakistan was the second most polluted, followed by Mongolia. Mainland China stood at the 11.

The World Air Quality Report 2019 compiled by IQAir AirVisual said Delhi registered an annual average PM2.5 of 98.6 ppm in 2019. Most other Indian cities too continued to dominate the list of most polluted cities. Except for Nagpur, every other city in India registered a decrease in pollution levels in 2019 compared to 2018 levels.

The major causes for the alarming rise in PM2.5 and PM10 particles in the air are transportation fuel exhaust fumes, waste burning, industrial emissions, smog, coal dust from thermal plants, construction works and loss of forest cover.

Carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, lead, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and other greenhouse gases emanating from the pollutants lead to pulmonary and cardiac diseases. According to WHO, air pollution leads to seven million deaths each year. The PM2.5 particle that measure upto 2.5 micrometres can enter the blood stream direct in inhalation and cause asthma, lung cancer and heart diseases.
