PM calls for 'janata curfew' on Sunday, social distancing to keep corona at bay

A 'janata curfew', the Prime Minister visualises, will empower the people to face a yet-unseen challenge of an epidemic that is engulfing the whole world, threatening mankind. It could also work as a rehearsal in case the situation worsens in the country in the coming weeks. He wants everyone to be responsible to oneself and to others, and not to be complacent.

NEW DELHI, Mar 19: As India is also on the verge of a disaster brought on by a global outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an address to the nation on Thursday, sought the cooperation of the people to fight the contagion and save precious lives.

Modi called for restrictions in people's movement to prevent community transmission of the epidemic. He advocated for social distancing as one of the best ways of prevention.

On these lines, he called for observance of a novel way to break the cycle of transmission of the virus by holding a 'janata curfew' by all Indians for one day, Sunday, from 7 am till 9 pm when nobody will step out of home except in an emergency. This is intended to boost the morale of the people and also serve as a trial in case the situation worsens in the coming weeks forcing people to stay indoors.

He also suggested a 'gratitude clap' at 5 pm that day to express gratitude to all those like doctors, medical staff and others who risking their life are doing an invaluable service to the countrymen in protecting the country and its people.

As the hospitals are overburdened with the viral patients, the Prime Minister urged others to postpone hospital visits for routine check-ups as also surgeries which are not urgent.

He also asked employers not to cut wages of workers.

Dispelling the people's concern, he said there are enough stocks of essential commodities and dissuaded them from any attempt to hoard grocery and other items.
