India bans all international flights

The new epicentre of the coronavirus epidemic, Italy loses 427 lives in 24 hrs, taking the tally to 3,405, emerging worse than what China was; new cases are surging in the US where covid is claiming lives of the young; India bans all international flights; Four people with co-morbid conditions have died in India.

NEW DELHI, Mar 19: Italy's death toll today surpassed that of China, which was the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak. With the loss of 427 lives today, the total has reached 3,405 while China recorded a total of 3240 so far. Reportedly out of the contagion now, there was no local cases in China today. Cases detected today in China were of those who came from abroad.

The US, where the coronavirus cases are climbing steeply, had 3,404 cases today, taking the tally to 10,491. And the death toll rose by 53 to 150. Infection was reported from all the States, that included two lawmakers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said those aged 20 to 44 years constituted the largest number of victims of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the people to observe a people's curfew on Sunday that would be a trial run for social distancing which he said is an effective weapon against the transmission of the virus.

Indian-origin actor Indira Varma, a star of Game Of Thorns, tested positive for coronavirus today. Earlier, Norwegian actor Kristofer Hivju had tested positive. In the past weeks a host of celebs, politicians and officials across the world had reported victims of the viral attack.

The British Government has given up its strategy of 'herd immunity' and adopted 'suppression' as a method of containment.

It is learnt that the Indian Government has allowed private labs to start coronavirus testing, for which there has been a growing demand. The ICMR has given the go-ahead to 51 such hospitals and labs. The test may cost Rs 5,000.

The Central Government introduced staggered office timings and allowed 50% of staff to work from home until April 4. The States have been told to enforce work-from-home for private sector employees.

The Government has banned all international flights from landing in India w.e.f March 22. In an advisory, the Government also asked children below 10 years and adults above 60 years of age not to venture out of home.

With 18 more people falling sick today, the number of coronavirus cases in the country has risen to 173. The total cases in Delhi has risen to 14 with four more new cases. 255 Indians stranded in Iran have tested positive. They are being brought back. One has died in Iran, the first death outside the country. The number of deaths in India has gone up to four with one death being reported from Punjab. Earlier, one person each died in Karnataka, Mumbai and Delhi.

The Delhi Government today tightened the restrictions by limiting assembly of people to 20 and ordered closure of all dining restaurants till March 31. Consequently, public transport, markets and parking lots were empty.

Maharashtra is the worst hit in India. In Mumbai, the dabhawalas, who deliver meals to people at workplaces, stopped services in view of the crisis.

Revenues falling, airliner IndiGo is cutting the pay of senior employees.
