UK returnees to undergo corona mutant test
The Indian Health Ministry has issued an advisory asking travellers who visited the UK recently to provide their travel history to screen for transmission of the new coronavirus mutant. All those who arrived since December 9 have also been advised to take the test.

NEW DELHI, Dec 22: In view of a coronavirus mutant spreading fast in the UK, the Indian Health Ministry on Tuesday issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) asking all international passengers who have travelled to or transited through the UK and arriving in India during November 25 to December 23, to provide their travel history of previous 14 days and fill up a self-declaration form for the purpose of screening for covid infection.

All flights to and from the UK have been suspended till December 31. However, the State Governments will ensure that these passengers disembarking at the airports in the respective States during the intervening period of December 21 to December 23 would be subjected to RT-PCR test on arrival for new coronavirus strain. Passengers testing positive will be isolated in an institutional isolation facility. Those who are found negative on testing at the airport would be advised quarantine at home and their condition will be followed up.

All the contacts of those travelers arriving at various airports from December 21 to December 23 and testing positive would be subjected to institutional quarantine. The contacts of the suspect case are the co-passengers seated in the same row, 3 rows in front and 3 rows behind, along with identified cabin crew.

If the results of genomic sequencing are consistent with new variant, then the patient will continue to remain in a separate isolation unit for 14 days.

The international travelers from the UK who arrived in India between November 25 and December 8 will be contacted by District Surveillance Officers and advised to self-monitor their health.

The travelers arriving in India between December 9 and December 20 will also undergo testing.

The new mutant spreading in the UK has been found to be more transmissible and affecting the younger population more. Of 17 mutations detected, the most significant mutation is an N501Y mutation in the spike protein that the virus uses to bind to the human ACE2 receptor. It makes the virus more infectious, spreading more easily between people.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry said the new strain of coronavirus that is spreading fast in the UK has not been detected in India. There is no cause for concern, it said.

India reported 9,556 new coronavirus infections and 301 new deaths in the past 24 hours, the lowest since early July, according to Health Ministry data released Tuesday morning. The country's total number of cases stands at 1,00,75,116 and the toll so far at 1,46,111. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala remained the worst-hit States.
