MUMBAI, Dec 27: An Income Tax officer has been arrested for demanding a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a doctor to stop action over non-filing of income-tax return.
The Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested the Income-Tax inspector from Kolhapur. The arrested officer, identified as Pratap Chavan, while assessing the case of the homoeopathic doctor, practising in Kolhapur, found that he had not filed his returns for the past five years and had amassed huge properties, according to a report in India Today.
The doctor was asked by the income-tax officer to pay a penalty of Rs 50 lakh, failing which his property would be seized. To settle the matter, he was told to give Rs 10 lakh. The doctor complained to the ACB.
A trap was laid and as soon as the doctor handed over the money at an appointed place, the ACB officials apprehended him and a case was slapped under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Shahpuri police station.
