WASHINGTON, Jan 12: The US House of Representatives voted a resolution on Tuesday late night calling on Vice-President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to the Constitution to remove President Trump from office for inciting protesters to storm the Capitol last Wednesday when the Congress was counting the presidential electoral votes.
The resolution was passed as per schedule despite Vice- President Mike Pence, breaking his silence, wrote to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a little while earlier that he will not act on the Dems' resolution, making his stand clear.
The House voted 223 to 205 to pass the resolution calling for stripping President Trump of his powers for inciting the mob attack on the Capitol. The lawmakers were earlier escorted by armed guards into a heavily fortified Capitol.
The resolution implored Pence to declare Trump “incapable of executing the duties of his office and to immediately exercise powers as acting president.” However, a Vice-President is not bound by what a House proposes. Republicans said it is not the job of the House.
Only one Republican, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, voted in favour of the resolution. All other Republicans opposed but did not defend Trump.
