Trump Admin blacklists Xiaomi, says it's a Chinese military outfit
Xiaomi has said it is not owned, controlled or affiliated with the Chinese military, and is not a “Communist Chinese Military Company.”

WASHINGTON, Jan 15: China has officially denied the Trump Administration's charge that tech giant Xiaomi is a military outfit. The US had blacklisted Xiaomi on Thursday saying it is a "Chinese military company" and it poses a threat to US security.

The Trump administration added nine Chinese companies to a blacklist on Thursday, including smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi. The US forbids its investors from investing in blacklisted firms. American investors will have to offload their stock in Xiaomi by November 11, 2021. However, the ban order will not have serious adverse effect on Xiaomi's business as the list only bans investment.

Xiaomi has said in a statement, "The company confirms that it is not owned, controlled, or affiliated with the Chinese military, and is not a “Communist Chinese Military Company” defined under the NDAA. The company will take appropriate course of actions to protect the interests of the company and its shareholders."

Apart from being China's No 2 smartphone manufacturer, it also makes electric scooters, earphones and smart rice cookers. It surpassed Apple in global smartphone sales in the third quarter and is world's No 3. Trump also blacklisted China’s No. 3 oil company, China National Offshore Oil Corp.

The ban list also included the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac), a Government-owned plane-maker
