animals in Bronx zoo have started showing corona symptoms.
The zoo has been closed to the public since mid-March, and
the first tiger began showing coronavirus symptoms on March
27. The tigers are lodged at the zoo’s 'Tiger Mountain'
exhibit. There is no evidence that any animal can spread
covid infection to humans, US public and animal health
officials have said. However, it has been advised that
anybody taking care of pets or touching animals should wash
their hands before and after the contact.
NEW YORK, April 6: A tiger in Bronx zoo in New York City has tested
positive for coronavirus. May be first time a human infecting an animal. Nadia
(see pix) contracted covid-19 from its caretaker when he was asymptomatic and
had not taken ill yet.
Apart from the four-year old Malayan tiger, her sister Azul, two Amur tigers
and three African lions have also developed dry cough, the Wildlife Conservation
Society said in a statement.
The Bronx zoo is located in Bronx Park in New York. It is the largest zoo in
the United States with 265 acres of area, on the bank of Bronx river. The tigers
are lodged at the zoo’s 'Tiger Mountain' exhibit.
Samples from the tiger were taken and tested after several lions and tigers
at the zoo showed symptoms of respiratory illness, said the United States Department
of Agriculture (USDA). The USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratories
had conducted the test. The zoo is run by the Wildlife Conservation Society.
The zoo has been closed to the public since March 16 in view of the general
alert for coronavirus, and the first tiger began showing coronavirus symptoms
on March 27. The USDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
are monitoring the situation.
State animal and public health officials are yet to decide whether to test
the other cats too for SARS-CoV-2 virus since the animals will have to be given
anesthesia. Dr Paul Calle, zoo's chief veterinarian, said the test done on the
cat was different from the human test.
“Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx
Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and
interactive with their keepers,” the statement said. “It is not known how this
disease will develop in big cats since different species can react differently
to novel infections, but we will continue to monitor them closely and anticipate
full recoveries.”
Anyone sick with covid-19 should restrict contact with animals, just as they would with other people. There have not been reports of pets becoming sick with covid-19 in the US, but the virus has been detected in pets elsewhere.
Corona positive patients must limit contact with animals, it has been advised.
Anybody taking care of pets or touching animals should wash their hands before
and after the contact.
This is the first case of its kind. We are still learning about this new coronavirus
and how it spreads. This case suggests that a zoo employee spread the virus
to the tiger. Further studies are needed to understand if and how different
animals could be affected by covid-19. State animal and public health officials
will continue to work closely with USDA and CDC to monitor this situation and
will conduct additional testing if it is warranted, the USDA said.
The USDA said only one tiger was tested as the collection of diagnostic samples
in big cats requires general anesthesia. Since all tigers and lions were exhibiting
similar respiratory symptoms, the attending veterinarian felt it was in the
best interest of the animals to limit the potential risks of general anesthesia
to one tiger for diagnostics.
There is no evidence that any animal can spread covid infection to humans,
public and animal health officials have said.
The incident has triggered a debate on social media whether the officer refused to take orders from a party leader or he was accused of any corruption, some netizens justifying the handling in either case, that Ratnakar was blocking public welfare work! It is true the Govt machinery has been the enemy Number One of the people of this country, existing for itself and for these politicians, for well over seven decades. Three other animals too had died - a tiger, a leopardess and a female wolf. Wolf Bhairavi died last Saturday, leopardess Mona died the Thursday before that and tiger Kesari died on March 30. Some of them had Shakti's symptoms but the cause of death has not been confirmed yet.

PROGNOSIS: It looks a Real New Trump is emerging - courageous, balanced, powerful and disinterested. In India the scene is just the opposite. Centralisation is the core agenda and identity of the ruling dispensation without which it has no existence, or in other words, it exists for that set of schemes only. A realisation of this never dawned upon any Opposition party in 2014 or any time thereafter, what to talk of being able to see it coming 70 years ago! The consequence of all this violation of basic natural law of the universe we cannot predict.
