India to slap permanent ban on TikTok, WeChat, 57 more Chinese Apps
India had told them last year the Apps were "prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India," and their explanation was not satisfactory.

NEW DELHI, Jan 26: India is slapping a permanent ban on TikTok, WeChat and 57 other Chinese Apps with effect from June next. The Ministry of Information Technology has reportedly issued the notices.

The ban follows the skirmishes at Naku La in Sikkim with the Chinese troops.

The Government had earlier imposed restrictions on the Apps in June last year on the ground of breach of national security. They included ByteDance's video-sharing app TikTok, Tencent's WeChat and Alibaba's UC Browser. The Ministry's order had stated that the Apps were "prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the State and public order". They were asked to explain their relevance and the threat they likely posed.

As the responses were not satisfactory, the Government has now decided to ban the Apps permanently, it is undersrtood. The notices to this effect were issued last week.

Last year's order had followed the conflict at Galwan valley in eastern Ladakh which resulted in 20 casualties on the Indian side. Later in September another 118 mobile apps were banned. In November Alibaba Workbench, AliExpress, Alipay Cashier, CamCard and WeDate were blocked. The Apps were banned under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.

A TikTok representative was quoted as saying that the company was evaluating the notice and will respond to it as appropriate.
