WASHINGTON, Oct 25: It was all hands on deck this time round for the GOP. An unknown Republican Mike Johnson (51) is the new Speaker of the US House of Representatives. Less known, more votes! He became a candidate after several rounds of voting failed to elect other Republican nominees, none getting the 217 votes needed for a majority in the House. Of course the Republicans have a majority in the House - a wafer thin majority of 221 - but a few of them voted against the official candidates each time, along with the Dems. (Unlike in India, an elected member can vote according to his preference in the US).

Putting behind the uncertainty looming over the Capitol, the weeks long chaos that seemed to paralyse the Congress, it was a surprise vote, all the squabbling Republicans joined together enabling a low profile, non-controversial and less known Rep Mike Johnson, an evangelical Christian, sweep the polls in the first ballot on Wednesday. Johnson got 220 Republican votes and Hakeem Jeffries 209 Dems votes.

Now the conservative hard-liner, who also backed the attempts to overturn the 2020 election and gathered much love from Trump, is the 56th Speaker. The extreme right had ousted Kevin McCarthy on October 3.

A friend to all and enemy to none, as someone in the House complimented, the Rep from Louisiana made it with mainstream Republicans and the far right and the renegade partymen getting behind him to finally break the impasse after three nominees failed.

Representative Tom Emmer was the third nominee who lost the vote for speakership on Tuesday, the hard right ditching him.

Some Netizens reacted as "awesome" while others said "US has gone MAGA" (because Trump was all for him). Yet another said, "I give him a month".

With all sorts of burning issues, national and international, like Govt funding and Israel and Ukraine, awaiting a new Speaker to deal with, Johnson's mettle will undergo a real test indeed.

“We went through a lot to get here, but we are ready to govern and that will begin right away,” Johnson told his first news conference as Speaker. He claims, it is reported, that God has put him where he is today.

Johnson said he will immediately bring a resolution in support of Israel.

President Biden congratulated Johnson and said they needed to “move swiftly to address our national security needs and to avoid a shutdown in 22 days.” When asked about Johnson climbing on Trump's bandwagon to overthrow 2020 election results (Johnson was a silent operator), he said he is not worried about the next election.

Former President Donald J. Trump said in a post on his Truth Social, Johnson will be a "GREAT 'SPEAKER.'"

• Experts blame violation of the Visual Flying Rules (VFR) for most of the chopper crashes in the mountains as the leading cause. VFR means fly only visually - because of the lack of navigation aids in remote areas or unreliability of GPS-like aids in hilly terrains or a remote manipulation of instruments in cases of sabotage - as the topography plays havoc especially in the monsoon (mid-June to September).

• On Tueday with Manang, the chopper was brand new, pilot was highly experienced. But it hit an 'invisible' tree and then crashed against a hillside. This CFIT occurred when the pilot tried to dodge patches of clouds even as he was following the VFR.
• Simply put, everyone knows flying in the hills during the monsoon is risky, but the companies want to make more money in any which case. This type of tragedy is very frequently invited in the Indian hill State of Uttarakhand as well, where pilots are even made to fly without the mandatory rest.
