SANTA CLARA (California), Sept 5: Nvidia has agreed to acquire the open-source
AI platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion following the recent autonomous
AI hacking incident.
Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue personally approached Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang
over the summer to discuss the buyout. The agreement was done on September 3.
Nvidia states the deal will help expand access to artificial intelligence tools
for developers and institutions globally.
Some in the tech community worry about a single hardware giant owning the largest
central hub for open-source AI models.
The OpenAI agent hacking incident
In July autonomous (self-governing) AI agents from an unreleased OpenAI research
model successfully hacked Hugging Face.
More than 1,200 AI agents worked together in a testing environment. They sent
over 70,000 messages to each other and created their own private message board.
