NEW DELHI, Sept 11: Apple has raised the iPhone 17 price steeply by Rs 17,000
(from Rs 82,900 to Rs 99,900) in India following the release of the iPhone 18
Pro lineup due to, what they claim, soaring component costs and global memory
shortages.
Global demand for memory and storage chips has spiked because tech companies
are expanding their artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure by leaps and
bounds.
This high demand for chips has reduced supplies and pushed up the manufacturing
costs for consumer electronics.
A point to note: Apple did not release a base standard iPhone 18 model
at its recent event. Instead, the iPhone 17 remains the standard non-Pro flagship
option, prompting Apple to reset its price upward rather than dropping it as
an older model.
They have already raised prices on Mac and iPad models earlier in the year.
Apple’s sudden price hike has broken tradition; usually, older models get a
price cut when a new lineup arrives, but this time they became significantly
more expensive.
Apple's officially retained and active generation on shelves includes the iPhone
17 series, iPhone Air and iPhone 16. Older premium versions like the iPhone
17 Pro and Pro Max have been officially discontinued from the Apple Store to
pave the way for the newly launched iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

High-capacity variants saw even steeper jumps; for instance, the 1TB iPhone
Air surged by a massive Rs 65,000.
The global situation: Apple raised prices globally—including a baseline
$100 price increase in the United States across every older iPhone model it
kept on sale.
Why India paid more: While the US saw a flat $100 (~Rs 8,400) bump,
India recorded some of the steepest price hikes in the world, with costs surging
up to 41% on certain models. This massive difference is because India enforces
local import duties and a strict 18% GST on electronics components, which compounding
onto Apple's baseline manufacturing price increases.
For every Rs 1,000 Apple increases the factory cost, the final retail price
increases by Rs 1,000 + Customs Duty + 18% GST on that specific Rs 1,000.
Because India enforces a 22% Basic Customs Duty (BCD) alongside a 18% Goods
and Services Tax (GST), the final consumer price absorbs a double layer of taxes
on top of Apple's price bump.
The 41% price surge explained
When looking at the baseline models, the retail price jump looks like this:
iPhone 17 (128GB): Went from Rs 82,900 to Rs 99,900. That is a 20.5%
increase on the total sticker price.
iPhone Air (128GB): Went from Rs 1,19,900 to Rs 1,49,900. That is a
25% increase on the total sticker price.
High-storage variants (e.g., 1TB): These versions absorbed the highest memory
shortages and global component price spikes. Because their base costs rose significantly,
the resulting duty and GST calculations stacked much higher, driving the final
retail price up by roughly 41% compared to their old prices.
Apple raised the baseline, and the Indian tax structure automatically scaled
its cut up with it, creating a much higher final hurdle for buyers in India
than anywhere else.

$300. At a standard exchange rate, $300 converts to roughly Rs 25,000.
However, Indian consumers are being forced to pay an extra Rs 65,000 for the
exact same phone.
Even if you account for India's standard 18% GST and customs duties on that
$300 baseline increase, the math doesn't add up to Rs 65,000. This reveals that
Apple aggressively altered its regional base pricing structure for India to
insulate its global profit margins.
Apple raised their base prices drastically. When India's ad-valorem (percentage-based)
taxes were applied to that already-inflated base, it created a compounding penalty
for local buyers.
Forcing an older generation phone to become 41% more expensive overnight is
an unheard-of anomaly in the Indian smartphone market.

over time. For over a decade, when Apple launched a new flagship lineup, older

local buyers bearing the global brunt of Apple's margin protection, mobile watchers
say.
The anatomy of the 41% anomaly
To understand how a consumer product becomes nearly 41% more expensive after

US market and the Indian market:
The US baseline increase: In Apple’s home market, the iPhone Air (1TB) saw
a price hike of $300 (moving from $1,399 to $1,699).
The raw currency conversion: At standard exchange rates, $300 converts to
roughly Rs 25,000. If India merely adjusted for Apple's global hike, the price
should have increased by this amount.
The reality in India: The actual retail price tag in India surged by Rs 65,000—nearly
2.6 times higher than the raw US dollar increase.
Why the math doesn't add up: The cascading tax trap?
The immediate corporate defense for this discrepancy is often aimed at India's
local tax ecosystem. India enforces a 22% Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on imported
premium smartphones alongside a strict 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Mathematically, these taxes are applied only to the increased baseline value.
However, even when you layer these taxes onto the $300 (Rs 25,000) factory price
hike, the math falls severely short of a Rs 65,000 consumer spike:
Base increase: Rs 25,000
Customs duty (22 % of Base) Rs 5,500
GST (18% on Base + Duty) Rs 5, 490
Total logical increase: Rs 35,990
There is a Rs 29,000 black hole between the logical taxed increase (˜ Rs 36,000)
and the actual shelf price hike (Rs 65,000) that Indian consumers are being
forced to pay.
Buffering global margins on Indian backs
This discrepancy exposes two critical corporate strategies:
1. Aggressive regional re-pricing: Apple did not just pass down component costs;
it actively altered its regional base pricing structure for India. By pricing
the base phone significantly higher in India before duties are even calculated,
Apple is using high-growth markets to cushion its global profit margins against
Wall Street pressures.
2. The "AI memory hoarding" penalty: The 41% surge specifically targeted the
1TB storage tier. Tech giants are currently locked in a massive infrastructure
war, hoarding NAND flash memory and storage chips to power Artificial Intelligence.
Because high-capacity phones require more of these heavily constrained components,
Apple passed the premium penalty directly to the consumer—and India’s percentage-based
tax system compounded that penalty into a historic market shock.
For the first time in smartphone history, holding out for last year's model
did not save consumers money. It cost them a premium.
Logically, Apple did not use 2026's high-priced components to build phones
that were manufactured and packaged long ago. Those older phones sitting in
boxes right now were built using cheaper components secured under older, lower-cost
contracts. So that argument is "lame."
Actually, the price hike on old inventory is not about covering new manufacturing
costs; it is about protecting the new sales.
If Apple had followed tradition and discounted the iPhone 17 by Rs 10,000,
a base iPhone 17 would have dropped to ?72,900. With the new iPhone 18 Pro starting
at an astronomical ?1,64,900, the price gap between old and new would be nearly
Rs 92,000!
Apple knows that if the older models remained cheap, rational consumers would
completely ignore the hyper-expensive iPhone 18 series and just buy the cheaper
iPhone 17.
Apple resets the price globally for all inventory on shelves to match what
it will cost them to build the next batch. That is called profit-windfall on
the inventory sitting in warehouses.
Above all, Apple believes the Indian affluent class will absorb the price shock
regardless of the math.
Footnote: Apple’s official justification that global component and memory
shortages forced this price hike contains a fundamental logical flaw when applied
to existing inventory. The iPhone 16 and 17 models currently sitting on retail
shelves in India were manufactured long ago using electronic components secured
under older, lower-cost supply contracts. By retrospectively raising the retail
