model, scaling up with higher storage capacities.
The Duo features a display of a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding inner display
with nano-texture and a 5.4-inch outer display and a 5.4-inch outer display.
The duo is powered by the A20 Pro chip running on-device AI models, titanium
frame and hinge cover, under-display FaceTime camera for hands-free and dual-capture
capabilities, and Camera Control.
The pre-orders start on October 16 and devices will hit the stores on October
23.
Specifications
While iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max have 6.3-inch / 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display,
the Duo has 7.6-inch folding Super Retina XDR (Nano-texture) and 5.4-inch outer
display. All the three are powered by A20 Pro chip. The chassis is aluminum
unibody for the Pros and Titanium frame & hinge cover forthe Duo. Camera interface
is Reduced Dynamic Island, and has Camera Control button for the Pros. Duo has
under-display FaceTime camera, and Camera Control button. Duo also has a dual-capture,
hands-free tabletop photography mode. Storage options are same for all: 256GB,
512GB, 1TB, 2TB.
Hardware differences
The iPhone 18 Pro series refines the classic form factor with a significantly
smaller Dynamic Island that can now display three Live Activities simultaneously.
The iPhone Duo removes the notch entirely on the inside by utilizing an under-display
FaceTime camera, offering an uninterrupted 7.6-inch canvas.
While the Pro models use an aluminum unibody design, the Duo incorporates a
premium titanium frame and hinge cover to reinforce the folding mechanism.
The iPhone Duo utilizes its folding screen for unique software tricks, such
as dual-capture (using front and rear cameras seamlessly) and a tabletop mode
for hands-free video calls and photos.
Apple provided several key engineering updates regarding the camera, thermal
technology, battery efficiency, and AI processing for the iPhone 18 Pro and
iPhone Duo.
Variable DSLR-like aperture lens
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max feature a major mechanical camera upgrade: a
new 48MP Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture. Moving closer to dedicated
DSLR cameras, it features physical aperture blades thinner than a human hair
that mechanically open and close. The lens varies from a wide f/1.48 to f/4
(with stops like f/1.8 and f/2.8) in aperture range. Its benefit is that in
dark settings it opens to f/1.48 to capture roughly 50% more light for low-light
shots. In bright conditions, it can close down to f/4 to reduce exposure naturally
and create a wider, organic depth-of-field without relying heavily on software
or computational blur. (The Duo will not have that kind of space).
Next-Gen Vapor Chamber Technology
To counteract heat build-up from intensive tasks, Apple implemented an advanced
thermal design.
The new vacuum vapor chamber has three times the thermal surface area of the
previous generation (3x larger). This liquid-and-vapor cooling loop gives the
A20 Pro chip the ability to maintain up to a 40% sustained performance gain
during demanding workloads like high-end gaming, recording high-resolution video,
or generating AI models on-device.
Vapor chamber cooling system is actually included in the iPhone Duo also although
it was earlier thought due to space constraint it was kept out.
Apple solved the space constraint by using an advanced chip packaging method
inspired by its desktop M-series silicon. Instead of stacking components vertically,
the silicon die and unified memory are placed side-by-side. This flat layout
lets the A20 Pro chip connect directly to the ultra-thin vapor chamber. This
design delivers a 35% sustained performance gain over the previous generation
without adding bulk to the foldable frame.
Battery endurance and discharge efficiency
Rather than just making the phones thicker, Apple leaned heavily on the efficiency
of its new architecture alongside physically larger cells.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max offers up to 45 hours of video playback—the longest battery
life of any iPhone to date. The standard Pro model reaches up to 35-36 hours.
Built on a cutting-edge 2-nanometer architecture, the chip slows down typical
standby and active battery discharge dramatically. When it does run low, it
supports much faster charging, replenishing up to 50% of the battery in just
15 minutes using high-wattage wired fast chargers.
A20 Pro: fully AI compatible
The A20 Pro chip is purpose-built as an absolute hub for artificial intelligence.
It features a Dual 16-core Neural Engine paired with roughly 50% more memory
bandwidth than its predecessor to process complex generative models smoothly.
It runs the new, deeply integrated Siri AI on iOS 27 natively. This allows
the phone to contextualize text, summarize documents, edit visual assets, and
execute complex cross-app workflows securely on the device without having to
ping an external server for everyday tasks.
The global e-SIM shift and battery impact
For the first time, Apple has made the foldable iPhone Duo eSIM-only worldwide,
completely removing the physical SIM card tray in every market (including India).
The standard iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have also transitioned to eSIM-only designs
across twelve major global regions, including the US, Canada, Japan, and the
UAE.
This structural change has a direct positive impact on battery capacity. Physical
space has been reclaimed. Eliminating the mechanical SIM tray freed up highly
valuable internal space.
Apple used this reclaimed space to pack physically larger batteries.
On the iPhone 18 Pro series, the eSIM-only builds gain an extra two hours of
video playback solely from the larger battery footprint enabled by removing
the tray. On the iPhone Duo, this space allowed Apple to optimize a dual-battery
architecture split across both halves of the folding chassis.
India is not part of the 12 countries going eSIM-only for the traditional flagships.
For the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, India retains the standard configuration
that features both an eSIM and a physical nano-SIM tray.
The 12 regions receiving the strictly eSIM-only versions of the Pro models
are: United States, United States Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Guam,
United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman.
The exception: iPhone Duo
However, if you purchase the foldable iPhone Duo, it features an eSIM-only
design worldwide—meaning the Indian variant of the foldable will not have a
physical SIM tray. Apple adopted this globally for the Duo to maximize the physical
space needed for its dual-battery layout.
Indian telecom networks like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) fully support
Apple's eSIM configuration for activations on all models.
